Poverty Rates over 3 yr Period in Travis County, TX

This map above shows the percent poverty distribution across Travis County, TX.
The data for the map was obtained from Census' American Community Survey 3 yr data encompassing 2008 through 2011.
Low poverty rates shown in Blue are dominant westward.
High poverty rates are recorded in the eastern part of the center of the county.
The lowest poverty areas within the county happens to be the areas with the highest educational attainment ( Bachelor's degree  and above).
The contrast occurs in the east side toward the center.
The highest concentration of poverty is within or surrounds the Central Business District (CBD) .
The area in white color is the Austin -Bergstrom International Airport .
It is important to note that, Austin , the state capital  occupies a huge chunk of Travis County and has become favorable to commuter residents of outlying cities and some counties like Williamson and Hays. People who hold administrative jobs with the the city or the state commute to work in the CBD but reside outside the CBD usually due reasons such as high rent, crime rates, traffic issues, etc.
With the recent and ongoing gentrification happening around the CBD in Travis county , it will be interesting to see how this map looks like in a couple of years.

Natural resources, construction and Maintenance occupations mapped!

This map shows the distribution of Natural Resources, Construction, and Maintenance jobs in Travis County, TX. The color ranges from Beige (lowest) to Blue (highest).
The Central Business District (CBD) has the lowest number of these type of professions.
They are concentrated in the Residential zone  of   Burgess' Concentric Model . It makes sense that construction jobs will be in areas where construction works are happening without having to pay the high rent of the CBD. Natural Resources jobs tend to be around where they play their role. Example; Texas Parks & Wildlife Department is conveniently located around McKinney Falls State Park.
In essence, these jobs are located where their resources or the market is located.

The median household income has some resemblance to the poverty rates in the county.
The highest median household income groups reside around the West Lake Hills along the Colorado River in the west while the lowest reside in the east side of the county.

Finding the Right Location Using a Specific Criteria

Appraisal Map

 Finding the best location for a business or any establishment can be visualize on a map. In this assignment, The client  was looking for  a location in College Station TX, that is within 3 miles of Texas A& M University Memorial Student Center (MSC) Bldg, located with 150 feet of main road, the parcel should be between 1 and 2 acres valued under $1 million and not in the 100 or 500 year flood-zone.
In this assignment, I digitized  the MSC bldg, use Selection by Attribute, Selection by Location, Buffer and Clip tool to accomplish this task.

This map was made to represent the zones in the US. The Midwest, West, South and East.
West coast obviously takes the cake!

Texas Precipitation

This map was a scanned hardcopy map. It has to be rectified. For this map, I lost a point for including the zero isoline. I was advised later by my professor that I should have started the isoline at 5 not 0.So, this map still has that error.

Wine export map...Making this map was very exciting..I started with ArcMap and exported to Adobe illustrator. The only trouble I had was aligning the elements in the legend neatly..

My First map with ArcGIS

This is one of the first few maps I made using ArcGIS about 2yrs ago.
A map to represent the land value by census tract in Brazos county,TX.
Very amateurish .....my professor would not be proud of this  but I was proud of my effort.
I rate myself low on this one...what do you think?
Can you deduce the message this map was trying to convey?

Why Use Map?

I have sat in several PowerPoint presentations with too many words that I fell asleep.I think i may not be the only one in this situation.That case was a bad PowerPoint presentation but that's how it comes to play when information could easily and effectively be communicated with maps.
Our society is becoming more visual than ever before.A picture on twitter,facebook,photobucket,flickr and other social media travel faster like wildfire than the lengthy news article.
A map can be manipulated to convey accurate or deceptive information but, however, the intended use of a map is accomplished when properly done.
The use of graphics,colors,lettering,patterns makes a map more appealing visually to the audience than a horribly made map.
Alright!
I know I have bored you with these many words already but that would probably be the most words I would use here unless they add further details to a map a made.
